| Growing up in the City of Detroit, Maureen Street began her working career in the auto plants on the line. She attended Wayne State University as a single mom with three kids, then went to MSUs College of Human Medicine and completed her Residency at MSUs St. Lawrence Hospital. While a Resident, she was awarded the Mercy Scholar by Mercy Health Systems an award given to physicians dedicated to community service and primary care to the underserved. She created a free medical clinic in the Womens Domestic Violence Shelter and developed a monthly lecture series for women living in transitional housing. After Residency, she went to Grand Rapids and worked at St. Marys to build a health center in the inner city of Grand Rapids; Browning Claytor Health Center was located in a neighborhood that had not had a family doctor for over 20 years. After beginning in a double-wide trailer, the center grew to build a permanent, $1.3 million health center next door. Her commitment to working with underserved patients comes from being unable to obtain basic care for herself and her children and the belief that within every human being lies the potential of unlimited growth and success. |
